Managing anxiety with hypnotherapy

If you’re feeling anxious and stressed much of the time, it is likely to be interfering with your life. It may be limiting the places you go and the things you want to do. You may have already tried a few different things to see if you can reduce your anxiety but nothing seems to be working.

Hypnotherapy has been shown to be very effective for people with anxiety. Most hypnotherapy sessions are split into two distinct parts: ‘the talky bit’ and hypnosis. The talking bit, which could be either counselling or psychotherapy, will help you understand why you feel as you do and to understand what can be done. Hypnotherapy can help you experience a sense of relaxation and calm while in a trance state. If you have any physical symptoms relating to your anxiety, hypnosis will also help to reduce these.

The length of your hypnotherapy session could be from 30 – 90 minutes. An initial consultation will generally be held, prior to your hypnotherapy sessions. This is to agree the aims and goals of your treatment, to discuss your symptoms and to give you a guide of the number of sessions required. This will vary from client to client due to the severity of symptoms and the length of time you have suffered with anxiety. As a rough guide, for long term results most anxiety disorders will be alleviated with around 8 hypnotherapy sessions.

Jenny was amazing. I chose Jenny because of her excellent reviews with patients with depression and life worries. I was at first sceptical about zoom meetings but this proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made . As for the zoom meetings they were great and always on time. And Jenny was always accommodating. I highly recommend her to others facing similar challenges

I had a fantastic therapeutic experience with Jenny and highly recommend her to anyone wishing to address any kind of issue, behaviour, habit/addiction - or simply for self-care.In six sessions she worked very effectively and empathetically with me to kick-start a process of change that I believe will be long-lasting. She provided a safe and wonderfully relaxing space to undertake this work - and at the end of each session I felt not only empowered but as though I was walking on air!Thank you, Jenny! 🙏🏻

Jenny has helped me cope with some big changes in my life and overcome self-doubt and lack of self-confidence to start afresh, make correct and considered decisions and significantly reduce the stress and anxiety I was under. Jenny was very clear in her approach and messaging and got me focusing on positives, whilst recognising the behaviours which were causing stress. I have no hesitation giving a 5 star review and would highly recommend Jenny to anyone with similar feelings of anxiety, and a lack of self-confidence as she can effectively help you overcome these.

After almost two years of trying to find the right support to help my daughter with her severe anxiety, we decided to try Jenny’s services. Within a matter of weeks, Jenny had helped her to turn things around completely and we now have our happy and confident daughter back. Jenny is friendly, welcoming and professional and put us at ease from the outset. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Jenny has helped my daughter with her chronic insomnia, which in turn was causing migraines. We've just cancelled her next appointment as my daughter felt she didn't need it. She's sleeping so much better, is much more relaxed about going to sleep and is also more positive generally. The migraines are reducing all the time. I really can't thank Jenny enough or recommend her enough!

Jenny was a huge help to our teenage daughter, who was suffering with extreme anxiety. She couldn't eat, sleep, and was missing school. She was a shadow of her usual self. Jenny helped her to cope with her anxiety and turned her life around. She is now doing really well, and managed to get through her exams and start college. Occasionally she still gets anxiety, but manages this easily by using the techniques that Jenny taught her. I have also recommended Jenny to many of my friends, who have all found her help invaluable.

I went to see if Jenny could help me just before we went into lock-down and have since had all of our sessions online through video sessions. I asked about lots of issues that I had and she said that she could try to help with all of them. The main issue for me was a huge lack of confidence at work (which had even been pointed out to me by bosses) and with certain women that I liked. These resulted in difficulties which were both of verbal and physical attributes. Now I'd never been to anything like this before, so the first thing for me to realise was that it wasn't like anything you see in the movies (at least not with Jenny anyway). It isn't one session and you're fixed, and you don't have a stopwatch being swung in front of you to get you into a trance state either. It's much more about concentrating on the positives, learning about what's actually happening to your brain in those moments, and then gradually changing your thought processes over time to make things clearer. It feels a little unusual, but isn't weird, and the bedtime audio becomes very relaxing and satisfying, even if I did get the giggles the first few times. I can't say that I wasn't skeptical or even that I wasn't totally convinced that it was doing anything sometimes, but over time it's left a sort of calmness and confidence to deal with situations better, to the extent that I'm doing things that I never ever thought I'd be confident enough to do before, and not constantly looking over my shoulder worried what everyone else's opinions will be. But to counter that, I also haven't changed who I am, which was also a big fear, so I'm only saying and doing what I wished I could've done in the past, rather than doing things which are totally out of my character. It's a boost rather than a rip out the old and bring in the new. Don't get me wrong, this isn't some sort of miracle cure, because you do have to work at it as well, but I guess it's a way to try to help me guide myself with any problems I face in the future too.I've had other help too, but Jenny has been instrumental to the change and guided me and picked up on and dealt with any other issues along the way. I really believe she could help many people with loads of different problems, but you just need to be open to letting her in to help you. As a further testament, I've just had the dreaded virus and been locked away isolating again, and despite being knocked about by it a bit, I still feel confident that the changes Jenny instigated are still there to help in lifes ups and downs, so it's not just a quick short term fix either! Thanks again Jenny!

I have found seeing Jenny for hypnotherapy the most effective theraputic practice I have tried. The way I see it, in this crazy world the ones with the mental health problems are the ones who don't think they have a mental health problem. I happy to accept that need all the help I can get to stay sane and positive. I live an hour from Stafford and that Jenny can offer her services zoom is wonderful for me. Finding the time to travel an hour there and an hour home was a bit stressful, not to mention the carbon cost of driving, whereas being able to have hypnotherapy in the comfort of my own home has made it much more accessible whilst still being just as effective. Thanks Jenny

I took my daughter to see Jenny as she was absolutely petrified of dogs and her nan had recently got a dog so this was causing some real issues. We had a consultation with Jenny and I straight away felt at ease and really happy to proceed with the sessions. Unfortunately we then had lockdown but Jenny suggested we try the sessions via zoom and gave us a hypnotherapy mp3 to start listening too to get ready. The sessions were fab and my daughter felt really at ease with Jenny. The sessions really paid off and my daughter is so confident around dogs which is amazing considering she would burst in to tears at the mere sight of one. Only downside is that she now wants us to have a dog. I would highly recommend Jenny, I found her to be really engaging with both myself and my daughter. She was very clear about how she could help and extremely positive about the process and how it could benefit us. 5 star service from start to finish.

Understanding anxiety

stressed and anxious woman with various papers being thrust towards her

Everyone has feelings of anxiety or stress at some point in their life. You might be going through a particularly stressful experience, such as a driving test or job interview. In these types of situations a certain level of anxiety can sometimes be helpful, or at least seen as normal. However, if you’re feeling anxious or stressed most of the time, then worries can spiral out of control and can develop into an anxiety disorder. Once this happens it can affect your daily life, particularly if your reactions are seen as out of proportion to the situation.

If your anxiety is high then you might feel overwhelmed, find it hard to make decisions and lose your motivation. This would be difficult enough on its own but you may also be experiencing elevated levels of stress or low mood/depression. This is because anxiety often presents alongside other symptoms, such as PTSD, phobias, IBS or depression. If you are experiencing a combination of symptoms, then you’ll find it extremely difficult just to get through the day.

You may have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and been given medication such as antidepressants or anxiolytics (medication that treats the symptoms of anxiety). If you have, you are not alone, anxiety disorders affect nearly 30% of adults at some point in life.

With an anxiety disorder, your life will probably have been affected, potentially impacting your work, social life and relationships. There are a number of different anxiety disorders and many of the symptoms can be reduced with the help of hypnotherapy. Anxiety disorders include: Phobias, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder,  Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Trichotillomania.

How do you recognise anxiety?

If you are suffering from anxiety, you probably worry a lot about even the smallest of things. You might worry about situations that could take place in the future, imagining things going wrong in huge amounts of detail. You might also constantly beat yourself up for things you’ve done or not done. You could feel constantly on edge and irritable, snapping at people over little things. It’s possible that you feel drained of energy much of the time and struggle to sleep properly. Physically, you might experience unexplained muscle pains, headaches or stomach aches. You may have experienced a panic attack. These can be extremely frightening as the symptoms include a dry mouth, rapid heart rate (sometimes leading to heart pain), churning stomach, feeling clammy and a strong feeling of danger where you feel out of control.

If you experience a few of these symptoms, then you probably have anxiety. However, the more symptoms you have, the stronger the likelihood that you have an anxiety disorder and you should make an appointment to see your GP. If you have already seen your GP and you’d still like more help with your condition, then hypnotherapy has been shown to help with anxiety related issues.

  1. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – Long standing condition where the person experiences anxiety around a wide range of issues.
  2. Mixed depression and anxiety
  3. Health Anxiety – Overly preoccupied with health Issues, constantly concerned that small symptoms are signs of a serious illness.
  4. Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder) – Long-term fear of social situations, often overwhelming.
  5. Depression – Long-lasting low mood that can return at various points in life.
  6. Panic Disorder – Regular panic attacks.
  7. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – Obsessive urge to complete various routines in order to feel safe.
  8. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – Caused by a potentially life threatening event or one perceived as such.
  9. Agoraphobia – Fear or avoidance of places/situations where you feel trapped or embarrassed.
  10. Emetophobia – Fear of illness or vomiting.
  11. Flying Phobia – Fear of flying in aeroplanes.
  12. Trichotillomania – Literally pulling your hair out.
  13. Body Dysmorphia – Preoccupied with perceived flaws in appearance.
  14. Compulsive Hoarding – Keeping an excessive number of things that have little or no value and finding it difficult to part with them.
  15. Claustrophobia – Fear of confined spaces.
  16. Injection Phobia – Including a fear of needles.
  17. Exam Stress – Stress building up in the period before and during an exam.
  18. Dental Phobia – Fear of anything related to a visit to the dentist.
  19. Anxiety and anger management.

Hypnotherapy can help with anxiety by relaxing you so that you can let go of any tension and see things from a different viewpoint. Different brain waves become more prevalent and you will likely be able to problem-solve more easily. The change in brain waves will also make it easier for you to take on new ideas and new ways of thinking. Most hypnotherapists use an element of talking therapy and this supports the trance session by helping you to evaluate your current behaviour and the way you think.

Hypnotherapy works in two ways. Most hypnotherapy approaches use a blend of talking therapy plus trance. The talking element of the session will help you to look at your anxiety from a different perspective. You might explore your current behaviours or thought patterns that are getting in the way. The talking element might be some form of Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or a Solution Focused (SF) approach. The aim is to help give you a better understanding of how to get better. This will then be followed by a trance session where the therapist will use hypnosis to relax you into a trance state. While in the trance state, which is a natural state of focused attention, you will be able to let go of any tension and relax fully. This allows your  brain to view the causes of the anxiety and see things differently. When you are in a trance state the predominant brain waves change from Beta to Alpha and Theta, these allow you to change the way you think and to problem solve more effectively.

Anxiety and Hypnotherapy FAQs

  • It can be caused by one or more issues:
  • Anxiety disorders have been found to run in families. However, whether this is due to a genetic link or as a result of children learning how to deal with their emotions from their parents is unclear. Certain personality types are also more likely to suffer from anxiety.
  • Life experiences can cause anxiety, particularly if you’ve experienced some trauma in the past. If you suffer from certain underlying health conditions, you may experience anxiety-related symptoms. This is why it’s so important to get checked out with your GP before considering other complementary approaches. Sometimes there can be a build up of stress, such as in a difficult relationship or work environment.
  • Alcohol and recreational drugs have been found to increase anxiety. If you drink alcohol or take recreational drugs excessively or regularly over a long period of time, it is likely that you’ll suffer symptoms of anxiety at some point.
  • Current circumstances can contribute to anxiety, however, how you perceive the events in your life are often more telling than the events themselves. If you live alone and are feeling isolated, this can also cause anxiety. This is because we are sociable creatures and a sense of community feels safer than going it alone.
  •
  • Constant worry
  • Overthinking things
  • Irritability
  • Feeling edgy
  • Stomach issues
  • Headaches
  • Muscles pains
  • Tension
  • Palpitations
  • Poor quality of sleep or short sleep
  • Panic attacks
  •
  • Your doctor should always be your first port of call when considering treatment for anxiety. This is because occasionally there can be other underlying health conditions that initially present as anxiety.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is currently the talking therapy that is offered by GPs. Initially you might be offered a self-help option, where you would be given a workbook or website to work through. In some areas the GP might offer you the chance to work through your anxiety within a group setting. Talking or relaxation therapies are often recommended before medication is offered.
  • Hypnotherapy can be a helpful treatment for anxiety. Hypnosis is classed as a relaxation therapy but many hypnotherapists often use a form of talking therapy alongside it. With some hypnotherapy approaches, you might also experience elements of CBT. This will have a greater long-term effect on your anxiety symptoms.
  • If you’ve suffered a trauma in the past, one that still haunts you, then counselling might be your preferred choice of talking therapy.
  • Attending a support group where other people are suffering from the same anxiety-related issues can help you feel that you’re not on your own. There are often various support groups locally where you can meet up with other people in the same situation. If you’re looking for a support group for anxiety then the Hub of Hope is a good resource. It lists all the local groups for anxiety in your area.

Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for anxiety. A meta-analysis carried out in 2018 found that participants in receipt of hypnosis improved more than 84% compared to the control groups who had no hypnotherapy. It also found that hypnosis was more effective when combined with a psychological element than just hypnosis alone.

It is always important to contact your GP about your anxiety before seeing a hypnotherapist. This is because sometimes anxiety can mask another medical condition.

Even before lockdown many hypnotherapists were running online hypnotherapy sessions for anxiety. The good news is that there is now evidence to support the effectiveness of online hypnotherapy sessions for anxiety-related conditions. All you would need to take part in an online hypnotherapy session is a laptop, tablet or smartphone, access to the internet and somewhere quiet where you can relax.

Everyone is different and much will depend on the severity of your symptoms and your commitment to the hypnotherapy process. You can expect to see some improvement in your anxiety symptoms after the first hypnotherapy session. You might feel more relaxed and have more energy. Your sleep pattern might improve a little, particularly if listening to an MP3 download everynight. However, you’ll probably need a few sessions before your friends and family start to notice any changes. After around 8 sessions, you should see a consistent change in symptoms, feeling calmer and more relaxed. You will probably notice a reduction in overthinking and have fewer headaches or tension-related aches and pains. By this point, you should be experiencing fewer panic attacks, or even none at all.

As hypnotherapy is considered to be a complementary therapy in the UK, we are not allowed to publish success rates for anxiety. Your commitment to the hypnotherapy process is very important. If you engage with your hypnotherapist and follow their advice, such as listening to an MP3 download everynight, then your treatment will be more effective than if you don’t. However, a meta-analysis carried out in 2018 found that participants in receipt of hypnosis for anxiety improved more than 84% when compared to the control groups who had no hypnotherapy.

The amount of sessions you will need for an anxiety-related condition will vary from person to person. The questions your hypnotherapist will ask to help them calculate the number of sessions you need might include, “How long have you had the condition or symptoms?” or “How severe are the symptoms?” Another factor to consider is the level of your commitment. You will see results much more quickly if you do the things your hypnotherapist suggests. You might be expected to listen to an MP3 download every night or to perform some other task in between sessions.

The cost of hypnotherapy for anxiety can vary from one therapist to another. This will depend on your location and the qualifications and experience your hypnotherapist has. To give you a rough guide prices can vary from £40- £150 per hour.

Unfortunately, you will probably be unable to access hypnotherapy for anxiety through the NHS. This is despite the British Medical Association’s assertion, in their submission of evidence in 2000 to the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology, that ‘Hypnotherapy and Counselling may be considered as orthodox treatments’. Your GP or dentist might suggest hypnotherapy as an option for anxiety, but it will be up to you to source and fund your treatment.

Self-hypnosis can help with anxiety as all hypnosis is technically self-hypnosis. This is because it is your brain doing the work, with the hypnotherapist as the facilitator. However, it can be difficult to achieve on your own and therefore finding a qualified hypnotherapist to help you initially is the best solution. Once you have experienced going into a trance state a few times with their help you will find it much easier to go into that same state on your own. The counselling or psychotherapy element of the hypnotherapy session would be missing from any self-help approach and research has suggested that hypnosis is more effective alongside it.

Hypnotherapy is able to help children with their anxiety. In fact children often find it much easier to go into a trance state than their adult counterparts. This is thought to be because children are more open about trying new things than many adults. The science to support this continues to grow.

Where can I find the best hypnotherapist?

Start out with the basics, Search for “hypnotherapy for anxiety near me” in Google or Bing. The results will contain a map with local hypnotherapy businesses. Start looking through their reviews either in the search engine or on their social (Facebook) page.

The best hypnotherapists will be registered with a professional association and  with organisations that are accredited by the professional standards authority. There are only two in the UK and they are the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and the National Hypnotherapy Society.
